What is a Bifold Door?

Bifold doors are one of the most effective ways to open up your home to the garden, and aluminium is the ideal material for them. Slim aluminium frames maximise the glass area, letting in far more light than a traditional door or window. They are thermally broken as standard, available in a wide range of RAL colours, and made to measure for your opening. Cornerless configurations are available for those who want to open up a full corner of the room.

Our cornerless bifold doors remove the corner post entirely, giving you a fully open corner, which is ideal for kitchen extensions and open-plan living spaces.

Every aluminium bifold door we supply features a multi-point locking system, shootbolt locks, and toughened safety glass as standard. PAS 24 and Secured by Design specifications are also available.

Long Lasting Maintenance

Aluminium won't warp, rot, or corrode. The powder-coated finish holds its colour year after year with the occasional wipe down.

With large panes of glass, the glass itself does much of the work of keeping your home secure. Choose toughened or laminated security glass.

Toughened Safety Glass

4–5× stronger than ordinary glass

Heat-treated to make it 4 to 5 times stronger than ordinary glass. If it does break, it crumbles into small, blunt-edged pieces rather than sharp shards.

Laminated Security Glass

Tested to EN 356

Pilkington Optilam™ bonds the panes with a tough PVB interlayer that holds the glass in place if it is broken, slowing down break-in attempts. It also absorbs UV, helping protect furnishings from fading.

From the rollers and thresholds to the handles and frame profiles, every part of our aluminium bifold doors is chosen for smooth everyday use, security and as much glass as possible.

Smooth Rolling System

Each sash runs on a bottom roller along the track and is steadied by a guide at the head, so even a wide set of doors folds away smoothly and with little effort. Optional adjusters let the rollers be fine-tuned in situ, and the standard Visofold 1000 roller is PAS 24 approved.

Threshold Options

Choose a low threshold for easy access between room and garden, or a rebated threshold for improved weather resistance on more exposed elevations. Wheelchair-accessible thresholds are also available, and we will recommend the right option for your floor levels when we carry out your free survey.

Handles & Hardware

Choose lever/lever or lever/pad handles in finishes from polished chrome and stainless steel to white, or colour-matched to your frames, with matching hinges. Thumb-turn and keyed-alike cylinders are available, and the handle works a multi-point lock on the main sash, backed by shootbolts on the folding sashes.

Slim Sightlines

Aluminium is strong enough to keep frames narrow, so more of each panel is glass and more daylight reaches the room. Smart’s Visofold 1000 Slim reduced its typical sightline by 10mm to 122mm, and profiles come with square or rounded edges to suit a crisp contemporary or softer look.

Traffic Door

Add a traffic door and one leaf opens like a conventional hinged door, so you can pop into the garden without folding back the whole set. It is fitted with high-security multi-point locking, just like the main sashes, and can be positioned to the left, right or centre of the opening.

Folds In or Out

Your doors can be made to fold inside or out, with up to seven sashes and 14 opening configurations to choose from. When folded back, the sashes stack neatly against the frame, leaving the opening clear so the room and patio feel like one space on warmer days.

What are bifold doors and how do they work?

Bifold doors are made up of a number of panels, typically between two and seven, that fold back on themselves along a track. This means the entire opening can be cleared, unlike a patio door that always leaves one panel in place.

They’re among the most popular choices for connecting a kitchen or living room to the garden, and aluminium is the most common material because the frames are slim and strong.

What are cornerless bifold doors?

A cornerless bifold door system removes the structural corner post between two sets of doors, allowing both sets to fold back and leave the corner completely open.

This creates a dramatic opening that makes inside and outside feel like a single space, which is particularly popular in kitchen extensions and open-plan rooms with garden access on two sides. We can advise whether a cornerless configuration suits your property when we carry out your free survey.

Are aluminium bifold doors secure?

Yes. All the bifold doors we supply come with a multi-point locking system and shootbolt locks that engage at multiple points along the frame when the door is closed.

The glass is toughened safety glass as standard. PAS 24 enhanced security specification is also available, as is Secured by Design accreditation for properties where that level of certification is required.

How energy efficient are aluminium bifold doors?

Our aluminium bifold doors are very energy efficient. All the systems we supply are thermally broken, meaning the inner and outer sections of the frame are separated by a non-conductive barrier that significantly reduces heat loss.

Combined with double or triple glazing, they meet current building regulations for thermal performance and can make a meaningful difference to how comfortable your room feels in winter.

How many panels can I have, and what sizes are available?

Bifold doors are available in a wide range of configurations, from two panels up to seven or more, depending on the width of the opening.

All our doors are made to measure, so whether you have a standard-sized opening or a large span across the back of an extension, we can find a configuration that works. We’ll measure up during your free survey and advise on the best layout.
